Superficial tissue layer

Definition: Superficial tissue layer is a layer of tissue superficial with respect to the tissue of interest. For instance, the scalp and meninges are superficial to the brain. For non-invasive diffuse optical measurements, the static or dynamic optical and physiological properties of the superficial tissue can contaminate or degrade the accuracy and precision of measurements obtained from the deep tissue of interest.
