Penetration depth

Definition: The depth to which light can penetrate tissue to the extent of several centimeters is known as penetration depth. It is influenced by light scattering, absorption, the subject’s anatomy, scalp-optode coupling, and the spacing between the light source and the detector. This is on the order of a few mm’s up to 15-20 mm.
