Extracerebral

Definition: Extracerebral means outside of the brain (cerebrum). In fNIRS research, the term is used either to describe the structures in the probed tissue volume, which is not part of the organ of interest, such as skin, skull and CSF. The extracerebral ‘contamination’ of the fNIRS signal is related to systemic blood flow and volume changes that occur in scalp, skull, or other extracerebral tissues. Extracerebral signals can mask the cerebral signals measured by fNIRS.
